Petra Collins says,
“A lot of people think that they need to literally find the thing that they want to create. But I think it’s about looking into the world to find what you want to change.”
Notes:
- Reflecting & and trying to create different worlds
- Looking back at childhood or my past, looking at or learning things I never knew about, thinking about topics I’m obsessed with or interested in (human anatomy for Petra Collins) and interested in how our internal processes are moving.
- Look inside what is bugging you, interesting you, or pulling you to learn more about it; it’s about looking into the world about what you want to change.
Assignment:
1. List themes, images, moments, and questions that excite you in your notebook.
2. Share a photo of what you find interesting, what inspires you, or even a few words.
Answer:
I wonder about what makes a human human. Though everyone isn’t perfect, we are right in our ways. Yet, there is stifle about what gets between us, causing mayhem and misunderstanding. I think about constantly as a child; the world is brand new, and we want to create ever-lasting peace and be our best selves. Along the way, we give up on that hope, maybe rightfully so, but we also lose a part of ourselves.
Then, I think, when I look at the images I’ve taken reconciling or coinciding with this theme, I realize or contradict myself that it isn’t that simple. As a child, I may think, wow, look at this wonderful, colorful plant. Meanwhile, it is an overgrown weed. As a child, I may question why I am so miserable, and as I grow older, I may blame it on an alcoholic or absent parent. How rational or irrational such a conclusion I don’t know.
What I know is that the moments we have as a child & adolescents are magnified by our limited breaths. As we grow older, for the better or the worse, the little things grow mundane, and even the greatest things are hiding or withdrawing within our misgivings, unappreciated, and undermined moments.
When I look back on my personal life, for the better, it’s the moments when I built a gratifying & lasting connection with another individual. And, when I had done something for nothing but my enjoyment. At other times, the worst moments are the most memorable. Like when I had an out-of-pocket interaction with my mother, acted on irrational decisions, and felt alone and abandoned for no other reason than being unwanted. However, amongst all these memories are ones where I was existing.
What I question the most about the world and myself, I don’t think is unique. I wonder why the world is the way it is, why I am the way I am, what makes a great human being, what makes a society worth living in, what I want to do, and why I am satisfied/dissatisfied. Besides that, why is my cat, Mr. Man, so freaking cute?
